The "City in transition" project focuses on the place of the individual in the community, and attempts to educate thousands of youths regarding social responsibility. This project presents an innovative model for activity in the areas of leadership and volunteerism. The goal is to create a process that empowers individuals, groups and communities through involvement and activism. Our aim is to encourage the citizen to think, discuss, act and participate in the decisions which affect their community, based on a thorough study of its character and needs. Zionism 2000 believes that every citizen has a clear and personal interest to improve the society in which he or she lives.
The project's main goal is to significantly increase the amount of youth, who take part in volunteer activities and in young leadership groups. However, while the mere increase in the number of volunteers and young leaders proves ascension in the level of youth involvement in its own community, it does not necessarily assure that the community's needs are met. Although there are numerous volunteer groups in each community, the gap between the needs of the community and the existing resources is still very large and even growing larger. Zionism 2000 believes that a great deal of a community's needs, can be met through the activity of volunteers.
The "City in transition" project aims to introduce a new concept in the management of youth-related issues in a given town. This new concept wishes to raise the issues of youth leadership and volunteerism to a higher level on the town's agenda. This will be done through the establishment of a dynamic municipal mechanism that will be able to coordinate between the majority of youth voluntary groups. The goal is to create a mechanism, which will consist of representatives of volunteer organizations, youth leaders, youth guides, community center directors, educators and members of the municipality. This mechanism's task will be to make better use of the existing voluntary youth forces, by pooling the different resources and empowering each and everyone of the youth groups.
As Zionism 2000 is interested in creating significant changes in the field of social responsibility, it has developed a holistic, in-depth and long-term approach. In order to achieve significant results and to be able to monitor the project’s progress in whole, Zionism 2000 has decided to focus on 5 locations: Lod, Sderot, Beit Shean, Tirat Ha’Carmel and Migdal Ha’Emek.
In each location Zionism 2000 implements the following:
- Creation and operation of a youth network committee for the empowerment of all youth organizations, youth groups and youth activities in town. The committee includes representatives from the municipality, the educational services, the welfare services, the absorption services, the local community centers and the various non-profit organizations operating in town.
- Creation of high-quality youth activities, and expansion of the amount of youths who participate in these activities. The activities include young leadership groups; afternoon activities such as music, film, sports and computer courses; youth clubs and others.
- Training and empowerment of community youth leaders.
- Creation of a connection between the local high schools and the community. The project’s staffs work in cooperation with the high schools’ staff in order to encourage as many students as possible to take part in community activities.
- Creation of adult lay-leadership groups, which work together to initiate new community projects.
- Establishment of volunteer centers, in which hundreds of volunteers can meet, share ideas, participate in volunteerism workshops and receive professional assistance regarding volunteer activities.
- Establishment of academic and occupational consultancy centers, in which young people can find extensive information regarding academic opportunities and scholarships, and also receive professional assistance with certain formalities regarding occupation, such as writing a C.V. and others.
