The Reach Out to One Child project helps needy children obtain equal opportunities in education by offering them funding for a yearly “enrichment basket”. The project, which began operating in 1997, currently provides grants to 1500 children.
The project goals are to:
- Provide thousands of needy children with a basic educational “enrichment basket”
- Enable individuals and businesses in Israel to “adopt” at least one child through a modest contribution
- Add Diaspora Jewry to the adoption project
Mode of Operation
The target population is needy children aged 6-12 who live in low-income neighborhoods or outlying areas. After the children have been located and their participation has been approved by the local welfare authorities, the process of implementing the grant begins.
An “enrichment basket” consists of three basic components:
- Acquisition of schoolbooks for the year
- Payment for the annual school trip
- Enrollment in one or two after-school enrichment classes, at school or the neighborhood activity center.
About $300 (1,200 NIS) are needed to provide one child with the above “enrichment basket”. Rather than giving the money directly to the child or his/her family, the organization purchases the textbooks and registers the child for the enrichment courses and annual school trip, according to the child’s preference. (Contributions to Zionism 2000, a non profit organization, are tax deductible)
