Gili (not her real name) is a 7-year old girl from Tirat Hacarmel. This is the second year that she has participated in the “Reach Out to One Child” project.
Gili was chosen to participate in the project by the Social Services Bureau in her town, which has been involved with her family for many years.
Gili’s mother has a serious mental illness, and Gili and her younger brother have been removed from their home and sent to live with their grandparents. Gili would never have been able to afford any sort of after-school activities, and certainly not the most prestigious of all- ballet class.
The grant that Gili received from the “Reach Out to One Child” project enabled her to realize her dream. She began attending ballet class, wearing the same dancing clothes as the rest of the children, and never missed a session. Her family, which had never taken responsibility for her in the past, helped her get to class every week and began to be involved in her activities. Gili’s sense of belonging and self-image improved. At the end of the year, Gili participated in a dance recital before the entire town, to great applause from the crowd
This year, Gili’s younger brother, who suffers from hyper-activity and ADD, also joined the project. In his karate class, he’s able to release much of his aggression and improve his self-confidence.
